Masking Noise: My Personal Experience With the LectroFan & MusicCozy
How I finally slept through traffic noise and upstairs footfalls
Living with constant noise—traffic outside, neighbours above, random bumps at night—can grind you down. I’ve tried earplugs, rearranging furniture, even moving my bed around the room. Some things helped a bit, but nothing gave me consistent relief until I started using masking noise intentionally.
Over the last few years, two devices have become essential to my routine: the LectroFan and the MusicCozy. They each solve different parts of the noise problem, and together they let me sleep through sounds that used to ruin my night.
Daytime & Nighttime Masking With the LectroFan
I started with the LectroFan because I needed something to block out both traffic noise and the thudding footsteps from upstairs. What I like most is that it uses digitally‑generated noise instead of loops, so the sound never repeats and never changes volume unexpectedly.
How I use it during the day
- Traffic rumble
- Car doors shutting
- Voices outside
- General neighbourhood noise
How I use it at night
At night, the problem is more specific: footfalls from the people above me. They’re not constant—just random enough to be startling and keep me on high alert.
The LectroFan helps by:
- Masking the low‑frequency thumps
- Filling the room with a consistent “audio blanket”
- Making sudden noises feel less intrusive
Layering Sound With the MusicCozy at Night
The MusicCozy headband headphones became my backup solution for nights when upstairs noise is louder than usual.
Why I added it
Footfalls and thumps are sharp and unpredictable. Even strong white noise can’t fully hide the impact of something like:
- A dropped toy
- A heel hitting the floor
- Someone pacing back and forth
What I play through the MusicCozy
- Soft ambient noise
- Brown noise tracks
- Low‑volume music without vocals
- Nature sounds (rain works best for me)
To play these sounds, I use the White Noise Lite app — it’s super lightweight but very powerful. You can download it here: Download on iOS | Get it on Android
The layering effect adds depth and masks the sharper peaks that break through the LectroFan alone.
Why Layering Noise Works So Well
- LectroFan handles the baseline — smoothing out the environment.
- MusicCozy handles the peaks — reducing the impact of thumps and footfalls.
- Together they remove stress — your body stops bracing for the next noise.
Tips If You’re Trying Masking Noise Yourself
- Experiment with noise types (brown noise, fan noise, rain, ambient).
- Position the LectroFan closer to the noise source.
- Keep MusicCozy volume low—just enough to mask peaks.
- Use a consistent nightly routine.
Final Thoughts
The LectroFan and MusicCozy together have been the most effective way for me to reduce:
- Traffic noise
- Footfalls
- Random bumps
- Neighbourhood noise
If you’re dealing with loud or unpredictable sounds—especially at night—a layered masking approach is absolutely worth trying.
